Blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Arteries carry blood from your heart to other parts of your body. Your blood pressure normally rises and falls throughout the day. Blood pressure is measured in units of as millimetres of mercury (written as mmHg). Your blood pressure is considered high if the reading is more than 140/90mmHg. Blood pressure over this level puts you at higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke (cardiovascular disease).

Your Skin
The skin, our body's largest organ, boasts remarkable versatility and complexity. It's both supple and resilient, allowing freedom of movement while providing essential protection to underlying structures. Sensitivity is another hallmark, enabling us to perceive even the slightest stimuli, with reactions readily apparent.
Worms
Worm infestations, often associated with children, can actually affect individuals of any age or gender, with threadworms being the most common culprit. These worms, also known as pinworms, manifest through symptoms like anal itching, disrupted sleep, irritability, fatigue, and occasionally loss of appetite. However, these symptoms may overlap with those of other conditions, and sometimes, threadworm infestations present no symptoms at all, complicating diagnosis.
Urinary Tract Infections
Urinary tract infections (UTIs), a prevalent medical issue, predominantly impact women, infants, and the elderly. They rank as the second most common type of infection in humans, with approximately one in two women and one in 20 men experiencing a UTI at some point in their lives. UTIs can affect various components of the urinary tract, encompassing the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra, collectively constituting the body's plumbing and waste disposal system.
Travelling with Children
Anticipating a family holiday with excitement can quickly turn sour if illness strikes during your trip. It often seems that vacations and health issues go hand in hand, leaving parents stressed when faced with unwell children away from home.
Tinea
Tinea, a common fungal skin infection, requires treatment to halt its spread. The most recognizable form is athlete's foot, characterised by itching, burning, or stinging sensations, along with an unpleasant odour if the foot is affected. Additional symptoms may include a red, scaly rash resembling a ring, cracks, peeling, blisters, nail discolouration, and bald spots on the scalp.
Teaching Healthy Habits
As the new school year commences, a multitude of health concerns arises for both parents and children. Making decisions about whether a sick child should attend school or stay home is a common dilemma faced by parents. To aid in this decision-making process, Ask Your Pharmacist, in collaboration with parents and pharmacists, has devised a practical checklist. This tool assists in determining not only whether a child is too unwell for school but also outlines the necessary steps depending on the nature of the illness.
Sun Safety
The summer season brings increased sun exposure and outdoor activities, which can elevate the risk of skin damage and potential skin cancer. Australia faces a notably high incidence of skin cancer, ranking among the highest globally, with rates surpassing those of Canada, the United States, and Britain.
Sexual Health
Community pharmacies play a vital role in sexual health by offering a diverse array of services, including information, advice, and a wide selection of products. They serve as primary providers of emergency hormonal contraception and offer guidance on contraceptive methods and safe sexual practices.
Reading Labels
Over-the-counter medications detail their usage instructions on the label, aiding consumers in understanding how to utilise them safely. However, prescription medications, governed by a doctor's guidance, may not have usage instructions on the label. Instead, they list the active ingredients, which help prevent accidental double dosing or adverse interactions with other medications, especially considering individual medical conditions and allergies.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis, a condition characterised by weakened bone strength and density, heightens the risk of fractures due to increased fragility. It develops when the body loses minerals like calcium at a faster rate than it can replenish them. In Australia alone, an estimated 1.2 million individuals grapple with osteoporosis, often dubbed a "silent disease" as its progression often goes unnoticed until fractures occur. Even minor incidents like a bump or fall can lead to severe fractures as the disease advances.
Medicine Cabinet
An organised and functional medicine cabinet should be a priority item in all homes. But while many of us have medicine cabinets, we often do not maintain them. To avoid your medicine cabinet and unused medicines becoming a health hazard, it's crucial that you only store the medicines you need while discarding expired or unused medication.
Kidneys
Our kidneys serve as our bodies' intricate and efficient waste management system, filtering fluids and separating waste from essential nutrients. While we possess two kidneys, the function of at least one is vital for survival, underscoring the significance of kidney health for overall well-being. Despite their critical role, kidneys are often overlooked, as evidenced by statistics revealing that approximately 1.7 million Australians aged 18 and above, constituting 10 per cent of the population, exhibit signs of chronic kidney disease, with less than 10 per cent aware of their condition, leaving about 1.5 million Australians unaware of their condition.
Keeping Medicines Safe
Many of the medications we rely on come with instructions to store them below specific temperatures. This precaution is crucial because some medications lose their potency when exposed to temperatures exceeding this minimum, while others may undergo changes in consistency, making them challenging to use.
Heartburn
It's a discomfort that plagues about 70 percent of Australians at some point: gastroesophageal reflux, commonly known as heartburn. Typically following indulgent meals, excessive eating or drinking, times of heightened anxiety, or during pregnancy, it manifests as a burning sensation from the lower chest to the neck, caused by stomach acid traveling up to the esophagus, resulting in pain and inflammation.
Head Lice
As children head back to school, the return to the environment where head lice thrive can leave parents feeling overwhelmed as they search for effective solutions to eliminate these pesky critters. Complicating matters, head lice are evolving into formidable opponents, developing resistance to traditional treatments that once effectively eradicated them. While head lice themselves pose minimal harm, the mere presence of these creepy crawlies in our children's or our own hair demands immediate attention, although ridding them can prove more challenging than anticipated.
Gout
Gout manifests as a type of arthritis marked by intense inflammation in one or more joints due to the accumulation of uric acid crystals. Typically afflicting men more than women, it often runs in families. Unlike other arthritis types that progress gradually, gout strikes suddenly, often overnight. While the big toe is a common target, any joint—be it in the hands, wrists, knees, ankles, or elbows—can suffer, leading to excruciating pain where even the light pressure of a bedsheet can become unbearable.
